When ‘psychedelic’ gets thrown around, more often than not it can easily be replaced by ‘impish nostalgia’. It became a defensive adjective a band takes on, to protect some aspect of their work from being too heavily scrutinized or excuse another for coming across as silly. Animal Collective comes to mind. But there’s something in the water in Japan, man, and it ain’t just Gojira. Its some molecule that remembers the essence of that music. Yura Yura Teikoku are more Revolver than Magical Mystery Tour. Where psychedelic means an approach to song structure and more importantly the studio but the music is pure rock n’ roll. YYT’s prolific 20 year career is filled with that sort of heavy music that hits a neuron like peyote. Unbridled acid-rock riffing juxtaposed with sweet dream like melodies all presented by an incredible guitarist/vocalist and wonderful, tight, and hypnotic rhythm section. But, as with many foreign bands, it can be difficult to find out much about them. This stellar record was recommended to me by a friend and I think he’s right about it being a great place to start. Apparently, it was well received by this guy, who I’m not sure is a native English speaker.
