Trying the capture the entire evolutionary process involved to create Hip-Hop on a two disc set just seems impossible. I don’t care if you are Columbia Records. However, Spotify keeps throwing this 39 track collection in my face. Styles and entire genres are passed over, sure, but it’s killer that I can listen to ‘Back Stabbers’ and then ‘The World is Yours’ on the same set. Far from presenting the evolution of R&B, this collection does do a great job of capturing the moments where Columbia managed to get into the game. What we end up with is an entertaining look into a style of music we don’t often identify with the buttoned-up Columbia sound. It’s understandable, yet no less a shame, that the contributions of countless other labels and studios were neglected on this collection leaving the discs with an almost tangible incompleteness.
