Monk’s Modern Music Movie Time

If the last decade and a half has taught us anything, its that if a jazz legend was doing something in the first half of the 20th century, chances are pretty high that some one was recording it. And shit – we ought to feel pretty lucky for that.

The above documentary, Straight, No Chaser, from the late 80’s uses archival footage mixed with some great interviews that gives us a fun look at Monk mumbling about rehearsal spaces when he’s not preaching with his keys. Well structured and expertly edited. My favorite scene’s just over half way through when, during a European tour from which most of the music is pulled, a Dutch journalist asks if Monk’s hats influence his music.

More recently, Monk’s Paris 1969 sets have managed to find their way on to what by all accounts appears to be a splendid CD/DVD set. The streaming version is top shelf stuff, real high class.
